First Community is delighted to launch its Green Plan in response to the NHS’s mission to reach Net Zero Carbon by 2040
The NHS intends to be the world’s first net-zero carbon health service and First Community is determined to play its part as a social enterprise providing NHS services.
The new Green Plan has set itself the following objectives:
- Reducing environmental impact: delivering care that is Net Zero Carbon, minimising our impact on the environment and respecting natural resources
- Improving wellbeing: supporting the health and wellbeing of our patients, staff and the communities we serve
- Investing in the future: making best value from our financial and other resources through forward thinking, sustainable decision making.
Sarah Billiald, Chief Executive, said:
“We are delighted to launch our Green Plan which will ensure that the care we provide reduces our carbon usage which, in turn will create a cleaner environment for those who use our services and the local community in East Surrey and Sussex.
Our organisational mission is to Deliver First Rate Care, by First Rate People at First Rate Value in order to achieve our vision of rejuvenating the wellbeing of our community. By delivering care in a more sustainable way, and supporting our staff, patients, carers and communities to reduce their carbon emissions , we are directly supporting this vision, enabling better health and wellbeing outcomes for our community and ensuring our definition of ‘value’ includes environmental impact.”
“I’d like to thank the Care without Carbon team as Sussex Community Foundation Trust for working with us to develop this plan drawing upon their expertise and best practice from across the country”.
The links between climate and health are clear. According to The Lancet, climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st Century – but tackling it presents the greatest opportunity to improve health that we will see in our lifetimes.
First Community will be raising awareness of the Green Plan over the next few months via a range of activities and events. It will also encourage everyone to commit to making a difference to their day-to-day lives for example by reducing car usage, rethinking their waste, and to consider energy efficiency in all aspects of their lives.
