From today, people registered with an east Surrey GP practice experiencing problems with their hearing are now able to self-refer into First Community’s NHS audiology (hearing) service if they are eligible.

Previously, people would have to see their GP to get a referral to this service. However, this new option will make it easier and more convenient for patients, by expanding the ways in which they can access the service and avoiding the need to see their GP beforehand.

Some people with more urgent issues may still need to see their GP to get a referral. However, patients can check whether they are eligible to self-refer by answering a few questions about their hearing problem.

To find out whether they are eligible, patients must complete an online self-referral form available on the First Community website. If any support is required to complete the form or if a paper copy is required, the Audiology team can be contacted and a paper form can be posted to them.

Once the self-referral form has been completed, if the patient is eligible, they will be contacted by a member of the team to confirm their appointment.

Speaking about this launch of self-referral, Faye Hopkins, First Community Service Lead for Audiology commented, “We recognise that many people experience hearing challenges and may not be aware that they can seek help directly. We’re really excited to launch the self-referral option for patients which we hope will reduce barriers and encourage more individuals to take charge of their hearing health.”
