Jane Bailey and Pia Williams, Specialist Neuro Physiotherapists within the Community Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation Team (CSNRT) have been shortlisted as finalists for the Audit Heroes Team of the Year Award for their outstanding contribution to clinical audit and service improvement.

The Audit Heroes Awards are the highlight of Clinical Audit Awareness Week which takes place on 23 – 27 November. It’s an opportunity to highlight the wonderful work taking place all over the country to improve health care for patients and users of services.

This year there are six award categories and each category is divided into two sections – local and national:

  • Clinical Audit Professional of the Year
  • Student of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Clinical Practitioner of the Year
  • Team of the Year
  • Outstanding Contribution by a Nurse or Midwife (a one-off award to celebrate Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday)

Jane and Pia were enthusiastic to participate in the National Parkinson’s audit and to make the outcome meaningful to service development.  This audit is run every two years to benchmark service delivery and explore patient experience.

The 2019 UK Parkinson’s Audit included data from 580 services across the UK of which 153 of these services were physiotherapy services, and included data on 2099 patients.  In addition, 8427 people with Parkinson’s and their carers contributed to the Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM). This questionnaire gave patients and carers an opportunity to comment on their perception of the service they attend.

Jane and Pia lead the local implementation of the audit, with help from the Community Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation Team (CSNRT).

Following the audit, Jane and Pia identified the actions they needed to take to improve the service they offer to Parkinson’s disease patients.

Their passion for service improvement is clear and the team have been ambitious in the range of positive changes they want to make. From external staff training and learning from other organisations to assessment of the most appropriate outcome measures for their service.

Jane and Pia’s dedication to ensuring that the audit results led to meaningful and sustained changes for the service makes them worthy Audit Heroes.

Winners will be announced on Friday 27 November.
