First Community has reached a significant milestone in its commitment to developing future NHS leaders by welcoming Alfie Holmes on a one-year placement as part of the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme.

The NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme is a prestigious programme that equips graduates with the necessary skills, experience, and knowledge to thrive in healthcare management roles. Participants undertake rigorous training, gaining insights into various aspects of NHS operations, including finance, human resources, and service delivery.

Alfie Holmes, a recent graduate with a passion for healthcare and management, has been selected as the first trainee at First Community. During his placement, Alfie will engage in hands-on experiences across different departments, working closely with various professionals in healthcare management roles.

On commencement of his placement with First Community on 4 September 2024, Alfie said, “I’m thrilled to be part of First Community and the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme.

“I found myself gravitating towards the Graduate Management Training Scheme while working on reception at the Southwest London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). I always had an interest in healthcare and my time at SWLEOC developed this interest to include the actual management and facilitation of healthcare.

“In the first month of my placement at First Community I will get a broad overview of the healthcare system which will include sitting in on committees and steering groups, observing therapy sessions, visiting wider NHS services and attending webinars.

“While on placement I’m also participating in an educational component with the University of Birmingham. At the end of the scheme, I will receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Leadership through the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Programme.

“First Community has been an incredibly welcoming organisation, and genuinely every single person I have met has been so friendly and accommodating.

“I would definitely recommend the scheme to others. It’s an unparalleled opportunity to gain qualifications and experience in healthcare management.

“It has been an incredibly enlightening experience so far and I’m looking forward to learning from experienced leaders and contributing to the excellent work being done in the local community.”

Jayne White, Associate Director for Children, Young People and Families and Renee Padfield, Executive Director of Operations (pictured) will be supervising Alfie during his placement at First Community.

“As a new graduate, Alfie brings fresh ideas and perspectives that can drive innovation within the organisation, said Renee.

“As the NHS faces workforce shortages and increasing demand for services, investing in young talent is crucial. The programme not only develops individuals but also strengthens the entire healthcare system by ensuring a steady influx of skilled leaders.

"We’re delighted to have Alfie with us for one-year and I’m very much looking forward to seeing what he achieves during his placement with us.”

Alfie’s placement is expected to bring numerous benefits not only for him but also for First Community and the wider healthcare system and demonstrates the organisations strong commitment to nurturing future leaders in healthcare.
