First Children’s Dietitians see children with non-IgE mediated food allergies, including infants and young children with cow’s milk allergy.

Our dietitians have created the short video series below to provide parents and carers with information about their child’s condition and how to manage it. Please watch the videos relevant to you.

Milk allergies can present as either non-IgE (a delayed reaction), IgE reactions or a child may have a mix of both. IgE mediated allergic reactions typically occur within minutes of consuming the cow's milk, whereas non-IgE mediated allergy reactions are delayed and take up to 48 hours to develop, but still involve the immune system.

Both types of reactions involve the immune system. Children with a suspected IgE-mediated food allergy should be referred to the allergy service at East Surrey Hospital as they require skin prick testing for diagnosis and management, which is currently not being undertaken in the community.

This series of videos will inform you how to diagnose your child's non-IgE milk allergy using a milk challenge and how to manage the non-IgE milk allergy now and in the future. Fortunately, many children do grow out of their non-IgE milk allergy and the videos will guide you as to how and when to reintroduce cow's milk proteins into your child's diet.

For children who have been referred to us, if you feel you need further support and guidance with this, please complete the clinical history form you were sent and we will arrange a one-to-one appointment to advise you further.
